Stop Being 'That Guy': A Field Manual for Not Getting Muted in Lobby Chat

Look, nobody hands you a rulebook when you queue into your first ranked match. There's no tutorial pop-up that says 'hey, maybe don't team-kill your own support main because they took the health pack.' You just have to know things. And if you don't know them? The lobby lets you know. Loudly.
Here at Planet1337, we've watched enough Discord drama and post-game chat meltdowns to write the manual the gaming gods forgot to ship. Consider this your orientation packet for multiplayer survival.
Rule #1: The 'GG' Has a Time and a Place
'gg' is the handshake of gaming. Typed after a hard-fought match, it means 'I respect you, stranger.' Typed after you stomped a team 50-2 while typing 'ez'? That's not a handshake, that's a slap with a leather glove.
The slang breakdown for the rookies:
- gg — good game. Sincere. Use it.
- ggs — plural, usually at match end when everyone bailed fast.
- gg wp — good game, well played. The deluxe package. Maximum class.
- ez — 'easy.' This is a declaration of war. Never type this unless you want your DMs to become a hate-scried inbox.
Real example: Last Tuesday, a guy in my Valorant stack clutched a 1v4, then typed 'gg' like a gentleman. The enemy team actually queued up with us again. That's the power of a well-placed gg.
Rule #2: Don't Team-Kill, Even the Deserving
Yeah, the guy AFK-ing in spawn while you get pushed is annoying. No, you may not punch him off the map. Team-killing is the gaming equivalent of honking at a student driver — technically possible, universally understood as a character flaw.
If a teammate is genuinely throwing, there's a report button. It exists. It works (allegedly). Use the tools, not the fists.
Rule #3: Mic Etiquette Is a Love Language
We covered the push-to-talk gospel before, but it bears repeating: your open mic is broadcasting your dog, your mom yelling about dishes, and your fan that sounds like a jet engine. Nobody needs the Planet1337 weather report from your living room.
Quick hits:
- Deafen yourself when you step away.
- Callouts over comedy. The 'I'm pushing B' matters more than your impression of Kermit.
- If someone else is callout-heavy, match their energy. Silence during a clutch is sacred.
Rule #4: Loot Etiquette Is Real
Need before greed, folks. If the healer is at 12 HP and there's one health pack, the healer takes it. This is not a democracy. This is not even a conversation. This is physics.
Same goes for MMO loot rolls. Passing on gear you don't need 'just to sell it' while your teammate's been farming that drop for three weeks? That's how you end up on a server blacklist, and yes, those still exist.
Rule #5: Know When to Log Off
You've lost four in a row. Your hands are doing something weird. You're typing paragraphs at strangers about 'diff.' Buddy. It's time. Close the game, drink some water, go outside and remember the sun exists.
Tilted gameplay is contagious. One tilted player turns a chill five-stack into a courtroom drama. Protect your mental, protect the lobby.
Rule #6: Don't Backseat Unless Invited
'You should've dashed left' helps no one who is currently dead. Unless someone asks for coaching, keep the post-mortem to yourself. The exception: genuine safety info mid-match. 'Reaper's behind you' is a public service. 'Why did you even pick him' is a crime.
Rule #7: The Newbie Gets Grace
Everyone was trash once. The level 3 account asking what a 'ult' is in year nine of the game's lifespan? That's somebody's dad, somebody's little cousin, or somebody's Tuesday. Answer the question. You'd want the same courtesy — and honestly, the gaming community survives on veterans who chose patience over gatekeeping.
Rule #8: Rage-Quit With Dignity
Sometimes you have to leave mid-session. Life happens. But quitting a competitive match and leaving your team to get steamrolled 4v5? That's the fastest way to earn a temporary ban and a permanent reputation. If you must dip, say so in chat. 'Gotta go, dinner' buys you more goodwill than vanishing like a Snapchat message.
Rule #9: Credit Where Credit's Due
Someone made a play? Say so. 'Nice shot' costs nothing and the lobby temperature drops ten degrees instantly. Toxic lobbies aren't born — they're built one ignored clutch and one unsportsmanlike 'lol' at a time. Be the person who tips the thermometer the other way.
Rule #10: Remember There's a Human
Corny? Sure. True? Also sure. The player who out-aimed you all night has a job tomorrow, probably. The teammate who misplayed is having a worse day than you are. Behind every gamertag is a person in an office chair somewhere between Maine and California, just trying to have fun after work.
Master these ten commandments and something wild happens: lobbies get better. People remember your tag. Invites start showing up. That's not luck — that's reputation, earned one 'gg' at a time.
Now get out there and be somebody's favorite random.
